Andria Allmond 111th Attack Wing Public Affairs Horsham Air Guard Station, Pa. -- The 111th Attack Wing here created its official Facebook page yesterday, helping to commence a solid social media identity for the Wing. While the Wing has hosted a public website and Twitter page for over a year now, the new Facebook page completes the trifecta of internet-based social networking sites. Over the past few years, the Department of Defense has acknowledged the importance of its military having a social media presence. Hosting social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are common routes for installations to meet this obligation. Chief Master Sergeant Brian S. Hornback , the Command Chief Master Sergeant, Eighth Air Force (Air Forces Strategic), Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, and Joint Functional Component Command for Global Strike, United States Strategic Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, said in the most recent Air Force Social Media Guide, "Social media not only serves as a way to communicate internally with our Airmen, but also as a means to tell the story of our Airmen to external audiences who themselves are actively engaged in social networks." Interpersonal communication is a major factor for the enactment of these internet sites. "These new information avenues will be providing the capability of instantaneous, two-way talk right in the palm of your hand," said Master Sgt. Christopher Botzum, a public affairs representative from the 111th ATKW. "It's been a long time coming for the Wing." Members are encouraged to visit their unit's sites in accordance with Air Force Instruction 33-129, Web Management and Internet Use, which details proper and improper use of internet-based capabilities. "We're very proud of the accomplishments of our members and want to tell their stories," said Botzum. "Our external web site is still where you'll be best able to read the full stories and feature on the men and women of the unit. But Facebook and Twitter allow members to attain a quick and easy snapshot of information."
